September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day seeks to honour survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. It also ensures that the public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Since 2013, this day has been observed by wearing an orange shirt in support of Phyllis Webstad whose favourite Orange Shirt was taken away from her in 1973 when she attended her first day of residential school. Even more meaning to this day has evolved since the discovery of more than 1,300 graves near residential schools across Canada. The effects of the residential school legacy continue to this day in many Indigenous communities.

To recognize this day and respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s call to action number 80, the Government of Canada passed Bill C-5 that provides a statutory holiday to all federal workers and those organizations following the Canada Labour Code.

Many individuals, organizations and companies are considering different ideas on what they can do to recognize this day in some meaningful way. As the day is fast approaching, AFOA Canada and the Indigenous Learning Centre are calling on organizations and companies to take two actions:

1. Mark September 30th by donating $35 (or more) to the Indigenous Learning Centre, AFOA Canada’s charity that provides bursaries to Indigenous post-secondary students in business or accounting programs, and scholarships to people working within Indigenous communities to take AFOA Canada capacity development certifications and workshops. Many of these individuals are survivors or intergenerationally effected individuals. And,
   
2. Walk/run/roll at least 5 kilometres in support of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and reflect on the meaning of this day in light of the recent discoveries of graves near residential schools across Canada. You can register by donating, and you will receive a runner’s bib with your donation confirmation that you can download, print and wear to show your support for Truth and Reconciliation, and Every Child Matters. We encourage companies or organizations to participate in this event with their staff, or a person can undertake their commitment individually at their own time and place on that day.

A donation from each registration will be directed to The Orange Shirt Society.
