Call for Nominations for AFOA Canada Board of Directors

AFOA Canada is seeking to fill one (1) board position at the upcoming Annual Meeting of Members on March 6, 2024.   This position has been vacant for more than a year.   To support youth development, the AFOA Canada Board of Directors would like to nominate and elect one youth to the Board of Directors for a two-year term at the upcoming Annual Meeting of the Members.

In early 2023, AFOA Canada sent out a call for an Indigenous youth to fill an advisory role.   The criteria for this advisory role is for the person to be between the ages of 18 and 28 and at least in their final year of University or College.  The person would like to learn more about governance and contribute to the achievement of AFOA Canada’s mission and vision.  The youth selected to this advisory role was Alicia Carter:

Alisha Carter is Plains Cree from Onion Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada. She pursued her post-secondary education abroad in Seoul, South Korea, where she attended Korea University, graduating with two Bachelor’s Degrees, one in Political Science and International Relations and the second in International Studies. During the spring of 2018 she worked as a team leader/ peace ambassador for North and South Korean relations for the Korea Unification Foundation and UNICEF. Her team was in charge of research of the economic steps and policies that would be needed for a possible unification of the Korean peninsula. Her time in this position fostered my expertise and desire to continue to work in human rights and socio-economic policy.

Currently, she is employed as a Senior Policy Analyst in the Governance Sector at the Assembly of First Nations. Her work at the AFN is focused on the New Fiscal Relationship, including work on the New Fiscal Relationship Grant, the modernization of Governance programs, the Default Prevention Management Program, its replacement with increased capacity supports, the National-Outcomes Based Framework, and co-development tables on working towards implementation of the 24 recommendations from the Joint Advisory Committee on Fiscal Relations. Her position as an analyst on the New Fiscal Relationship would be greatly benefited. by the knowledge and expertise, the position as a youth board member would allow her, through meeting and working with experts and technicians that also work towards increased jurisdiction for First Nations over socio-economic affairs. As a youth board member, she would like to see the strengthening of the relationship between the AFN and AFOA and potentially allowing for increased dialogue on strategies that would increase participation in economic growth and sufficient, predictable, long-term funding for First Nations governments and institutions to achieve wellbeing for Nations and their citizens.

Given the chance to, she hopes that she can also be an example to other Indigenous women that they are worthy of having a voice and to work towards occupying spaces that were previously taken
from indigenous peoples in academics and politics. She commits to working as an efficient asset as a youth board member and would find great professional and personal satisfaction in the position.

Below is additional information on the time and commitment involved to serve on the Board:

  • 3 Board meetings are held throughout the year (meetings are one-day in duration and travel will be covered by AFOA Canada)
  • 2 to 3 teleconference meetings are scheduled (usually 1 to 2 hours in duration)
