Where to start? How to make a real contribution to your community by playing an important role in decision-making on matters of policy. The request can come from Chief and Council or your supervisor: develop a write-up or a draft, written policy on a certain issue for consideration by your community and its leadership. This 1-day virtual workshop will provide participants with the basics on to how get started; where to look for examples of how it’s been done in other Indigenous communities; researching the issue; developing alternative, optional responses; and how to present all this in written form.

For organizations and individuals involved in public policy and administration, the Briefing Note (BN) is a key tool. It’s also an essential instrument for sharing other information, insight and analysis with work colleagues and others in your organization. Briefing Notes are used not only in policy and administrative work, but their creation and deployment amount to an important skill and tool in all types of organizational life. This 1-day virtual workshop will equip participants with a clear guide on to how to think about Briefing Notes, their many purposes, uses and applications; the several different forms they take; (Decision Notes; Information Notes); planning and preparing to create a Briefing Note; and how, if requested, to orally present a briefing to colleagues, management or government.

Key elements in decision-making in many First Nations’ governments and other organizations ,“decision notes” are a means of setting out in writing for Indigenous leadership, an outline of the important considerations in making a decision by Chief and Council (or Board of Directors). This 1-day webinar will include: framing the issue at hand; how to set out alternative options, costs and possible implications. Guidance will also be provided on how to orally present this information effectively to decision-makers
