Indigenous Financial Management Apprenticeship Program
Developed in collaboration with AFOA Canada, Indigenous Services Canada, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada and Treasury Board Secretariat, the 24-month Indigenous Financial Management Apprenticeship Program (IFMAP) seeks to empower Indigenous individuals interested in finance. It offers a comprehensive blend of education and hands-on experience, enabling apprentices to build essential skills for junior financial roles or to uplift financial literacy within their communities. Ultimately, IFMAP is intended to serve as a launch pad for a financial career. Successful apprentices will complete two years of post-secondary education. The program includes the following elements:
- Education: 7 courses are offered that are part of the AFOA Canada Indigenous Financial Management Certificate (IFMC) program. These courses will be offered by AFOA Canada and our partnering post-secondary academic institution, Simon Fraser University (SFU).
- Experience: On-the-job experience will be hosted by federal departments, where apprentices will work in key financial teams and projects to build up their level of practical knowledge and expertise.
- Support: Ongoing support will be available to apprentices throughout the program and after its completion. In addition to education and work-specific support, each apprentice will have a financial professional mentor for their oversight and guidance.
