Course Completion and Grading

This course has fourteen lessons that run over a 15-week period. Although a suggested schedule follows, you are urged to make your own schedule, paying close attention to exact assignment due dates. For each lesson, you are required to share information with others via the group discussion area in Moodle the AFOA Canada education platform. Each lesson has a specific group discussion activity. Your instructor/facilitator will monitor the discussion contributions to determine a participation grade, and provide support where required. While frequency of your contribution to the discussion is a factor in the assessment, the quality of the interaction is more important. Course Description

This course focuses on your role as a financial manager and your ability to make sound and informed decisions as your Indigenous organization seeks to attain high performance. The key processes in attaining high performance are: strategic management; performance management; and effective decision making. These processes are thoroughly discussed in this course, and you will be invited to apply them to your organization. This course covers the following:

Course Description

Learning about Indigenous History, current issues and where we are headed as Indigenous People is critical knowledge for all professionals working within an Indigenous environment. This course is intended to provide students with an understanding of a range of events and issues that impacted Indigenous Peoples, either positively or negatively from early contact with the Old World to the present. This course covers the following:

      • Growth of Indigenous Political Organizations

Course Description

Finance Managers are often asked to wear more than one “hat” and often tackle Human Resource and financial Issues in their organizations. The skills and knowledge gained will enable the financial officer to ensure that their organization hires, trains, and retains desired personnel. Through this course, participants will also gain the skills and knowledge that will enable them to better identify, review and address some of the fiscal challenges of an Indigenous Financial Officer.  This course covers the following:

      • Human Resources issues focusing on increasing accountability
      • HR practices relating to recruitment, selection and retaining employees
      • HR practices relating to Job descriptions and salary scales
      • Employment Law and legislation
      • Identifying and Developing Financial and strategic alliances
