Canada has standard setting oversight councils that establish and maintain standards on accounting and auditing in the public interest.  In May 2021, they established an Independent Review Committee on Standard Setting (IRCSS) to review the current governance and structure for establishing Canadian accounting and assurance standards and to prepare for what might be needed in the future – including sustainability standards.

Demand for information on a company’s environment, social and governance performance has increased dramatically around the world.  The IRCC believes that a sustainability standards board should be created and a sustainability standard should be created.   The IRCSS, through a consultation paper, is requesting input to this process from all Canadians including indigenous peoples.

AFOA Canada is hosting a workshop with Financial Reporting & Assurance Standards Canada’s Senior Vice-President, Stephenie Fox, FCPA, FCA to discuss and provide input on sustainability from an indigenous perspective. AFOA Members are welcomed to provide comments for the Consultation Paper and are due on March 31, 2022.
