Indigenous Leaders to attend Harvard through AFOA Canada
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON, June 24, 2024 – AFOA Canada has selected twenty elected officials and senior managers from Indigenous communities across Canada to attend a specialized program on Tribal Leadership at Harvard Business School (HBS) from June 23-28, 2024.
The program is in partnership with the National Congress of American Indians and San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. It is designed to enrich understanding of subjects crucial to Indigenous tribal leadership using the HSB case study method. Topics include leadership and crisis, multi-party negotiations, economic opportunity in climate change, nation building and tribal governance, and more.
“As an elected chief, being able to attend a program that focuses on what we need to know as leaders is invaluable,” says Chief Kelly LaRocca, The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. “The opportunity to learn with other Indigenous leaders at a renowned university is amazing. I look forward to bringing back fresh ideas and perspectives to my community.”
This is the second year of the program. A third cohort is expected to take place June 2025.
“Indigenous leaders operate in a unique context,” says Terry Goodtrack, President and CEO, AFOA Canada. “Equipping them with the necessary tools through a program like this holds the promise of transformative change within Indigenous communities.”
