This project aims to obtain technical input from AFOA Canada members on Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) program authorities for the modernization of the Indigenous Governance and Capacity Programs, with a particular focus on Band Support Funding and Professional and Institutional Development Programs.

ISC, through the collaborative work of the Governance Modernization Working Group (co-chaired by ISC and AFN, with the involvement of AFOA representatives) is preparing a technical report on the needs and costs associated with First Nations carrying out the function of governance. This work will inform the development of models for new or revised programs and funding formulas in order to improve Canada’s support for Indigenous Governance. This work recognizes that the current suite of programs does not, as designed, meet First Nation governments’ needs.
